Chapter 2

Troubling Signs

1st - 8th of Jahrdrug, 2000 I.C.

New Moon on the 6th of Jahrdrug

Hear ye! Hear ye!

  • Sir Faustus von Reikwald and Diegoma Altriste had a tête-à-tête on the streets of Mordheim which almost came to blows. Thankfully some foolish warbands did the fighting for them. The warband [,Name of winning warband from Stand Aside & Let Me Pass,] who supported [Name of settlement rewarding the winner] carried the day and [Name of settlement leader which “stepped aside”] had to make way for [Name of settlement leader which “remained on road”]. Rumours that the new bounty which has been commissioned to beat [warrior name who suffered Sore Loser bounty] to within an inch of their life was placed by [Name of settlement leader which “stepped aside”] is completely unfounded.

  • The monsterous undead wolf which was plaguing the countryside has been caught by [Name of winning warband from Direwolf], to everyone’s relief. Well, almost everyone. “Black Pitters are still going missing, only now straight from our new shacks,” complains Melinda Metze, a proud first time owner of a lean-to. “At least with the wolves we ‘ad a body to bury. All that’s been left of those who’s dissapeared is four drops of blood.”

  • The Bastardly Bandits outlaws have once more been put to flight while raiding Ahmeen, the Araby Merchant, who has newly arrived in the region. The warband, [Name of winning warband from The Araby Merchant], defeated the outlaw’s leader, but Haug the Horrible somehow removed himself from the field during the confusion of battle. Ahmeen is grateful for being rescued, especially to the warbands that were able to recover a few crates of his trinkets. Ahmeen’s other 30+ crates are still missing and the merchant asks everyone to be on the lookout for anyone carrying scimitars, and selling exotic dried fruit or Araby charms.

  • The destitute of Mordheim have finally found their own home with the assistance of warbands such as, [Name of any warbands taking part in Black Pit Settlers scenario], who secured an area south of the city. Residents are calling the settlement the “Valley of Dusk Shade”, but everyone else dubs it The Black Pit. The filthy give their thanks.

Chapter 2 Special Rules

Within each scenario this chapter can be found a Chapter Goal. Chapter goals are special objectives that must be secured during battles, but the fruits of which are awarded by the campaign administrator (CA) once all the chapter’s games have been played. Each chapter goal has a different means of being secured which is explained in their respective scenario.

Which of the rewards below are available equals the number of chapter goals secured. For example, if three warband were each able to secure a chapter goal, rewards # 1, 2, and 3 would be available, if four warbands did so, rewards 1–4 are for the taking, etc.

The rewards are listed in order of importance. Should only one warband, for example, secure a chapter goal, they will receive the Scorpion Dagger as a reward. If three warbands secure chapter goals, the Scorpion Dagger, Adjutant’s Bugle, and Amazing Ranaldi’s Guarantee are the available rewards. Remaining rewards are discarded.

Who gets what?

For this chapter the campaign administrator randomly determines the order in which players that secured Chapter Goals can choose from the available rewards. For example if three players (A, B, & C) secured chapter goals, the CA randomly rolling for selection order might come up with:

  1. Player B

  2. Player A

  3. Player C

In this case Player B first chooses from one of the three rewards (Scorpion Dagger, Snotball Trophy, or Amazing Ranaldi’s Guarantee), then Player A from the two remaining rewards, and Player C receives whatever is left.

Chapter Goal Reward Descriptions

A Dark Artefact, this dagger has an unnaturally black blade, which is etched with ancient Araby runes. The handle is slightly curved and is designed in the shape of a scorpion’s tail with the stinger as the dagger’s pommel. Brought to Mordheim by Ahmeen, the Araby Merchant, the dagger went missing as a result of the Bastardly Bandits’ raid on his wagon several days ago.

For full details of it’s powers and burdens see the Scorpion Dagger Dark Artefact Description.

The Scorpion Dagger

The Adjutant’s Bugle - Loyalty Symbol

This Loyalty Symbol is the bugle officially used by the adjutant of the Marshal of Mordheim to direct the standing army of the city. While now broken, it still has great significance to many in the region who remember its call. Especially so for the residents of Brigandsburg. In addition to the loyalty and scenario selection benefits loyalty symbols will reward in any settlement, gifting the Adjutant’s Bugle to Brigandsburg will half the costs of any weapons and armour you purchase during the Chapter it was gifted in.

The chapter goal turns out to be an important piece of equipment or sentimental object of a hired sword that has gone missing. You can use this to gain the service of a hired sword for free for one game, even if they would not normally work for you (see the Mordheim rulebook). If you could hire the mercenary and they survive the battle they served you pro bono, you can keep them on your roster for just the upkeep cost.

If you are using the optional Mordheim Mercenary Market rules, this reward can be used to automatically have the “winning bid” a single available hired sword, or even steal a hired sword already working for another warband into your service! If you could hire the mercenary and they survive the free battle they serve in, you can keep them on your roster for just the upkeep cost. If not, they return to the mercenary market.

You need not immediately use this reward and can save it for a later turn. The mercenary reward-object is considered stored equipment and should be placed into a storage container during battles. Anyone stealing the object from you can use it as above.

Free Hired Sword

The chapter goal turns out to be something of value to an agent which is willing to spy for you. Your warband earns an Ambush Point which can be used in any later chapter.
