9. Bounties

Bounties in a comet-shell

Within some scenarios, the actions of warriors can result in a bounty being placed upon their heads if using this optional rule. Should opposing warbands take such a wanted warrior out of action, they earn the gold crown reward offered by the bounty.

Bounties have an initial Base Prize as well as an Escalation Rate by which the bounty increases over time. Some bounties have additional special rules. Each bounty is fully described in the scenario in which it appears.

Bounties - Full Rules

Warriors often engage in activities which result in the damage or loss of honor, property, even life. Victims of such misconduct cry out for justice, but in the anarchy of the Doom redress for grievances only comes to those who can pay for it.

In some scenarios the ire of locals can be provoked by the actions of your warriors, while within others your warband may find opportunities to lay the blame of their wrongdoings on rivals. In any case, a Bounty is placed on the head of the accused warrior or in many cases the warband’s leader. Each bounty has a specific name.

The bounty is a reward paid to any warband that can take the wanted warrior out of action. The bounty is paid only once. The moment the offending warrior has been taken out of action by an opposing player, the aggrieved party is satisfied and the bounty removed. Bounties are fully detailed in the scenarios where they are found in.

Bounties have a Base Prize and an Escalation Rate. The base prize is the initial amount in gold crowns that the bounty will pay if collected during the next campaign chapter. The escalation rate is the amount by which the base prize increases over time if the bounty is not collected. The longer a warrior with a price on their head remains “at large” the greater the reward for taking them out of action. Some bounties have means to end the bounty before the reward can be collected if warbands can achieve them. Bounties may come with other special rules effecting the warrior or warband while the bounty remains active.

Inform your campaign administrator of each bounty suffered by recording them into your End of Chapter Data Sheet, in the box labelled, Bounties for Your Warriors.

Players cannot collect bounties on their own warriors. Should the actions of a Hired Sword or Dramatis Personae serving your warband ever result in a bounty, it will automatically be placed on your warband’s leader and not the hired sword, unless otherwise noted. There is no limit to the number of bounties a warrior can have, but no warrior can have more than one bounty of the same name on their heads at the same time.

Warbands collect all outstanding bounties on a rival they take out of action. Bounties are terminated should wanted warriors ever leave their warband. They either escape the region or some unknown codger later collects the reward.

Example Bounty: Unforgiven

A trumped up excuse (maybe) has been made about your warrior and funds gathered to extract justice. Whether guilty or not, a bounty is placed on their head.

Base Prize: 10 GC

Escalation Rate: 5 GC/chapter
