10. Side Quests

Side Quests are optional short stories within Mayhem in Mordheim that last a set or random number of campaign turns. Side quests often appear within scenarios as secondary goals for the game. All side quests offer rewards to warbands either during the quest, at its conclusion, or both. Your gaming group can decide whether or not to play certain side quests or none at all as part of your campaign.

The stories of each side quest progress differently, but they all do so through warbands completing Side Quest Objectives. Once the required objectives have been accomplished, the side quest reaches its conclusion and ends. Completing objectives can range from finding clues on the battlefield, to charitably gifting gold, to interacting with models during a game. How side quest objectives are completed is detailed in both the scenarios where objectives appear as well as in the full description of each side quest found in the Campaign Administrator’s section.

For most sides quests warbands need to first find or encounter an objective in order to participate in the adventure. From that point on the warband is active in the side quest and can progress by completing its objectives and possibly reaping its rewards.

Side Quest Objectives

Some side quests include special scenarios which are played outside of normal campaign turns. While there is no requirement for when special scenarios are to be played, the sooner the better. To put off playing a special scenario several turns in order to better prepare your warband for that game is in bad taste and often disrespectful to fellow players.

All rewards side quests provide are detailed in the side quest’s full description. Some side quests only pay upon the completion of the adventure, while others provide rewards along the way.

Side Quest Rewards

When your warband discovers and completes a side quest objective make sure to let your campaign administrator know! Record the objective (and reward, if any) in the scenario spoils table of your Post Battle Worksheet and the name of the side quest plus your total number of completed objectives in the active sides quests table of your End of Chapter Data Sheet.

The objectives of some side quests are more detailed than others. Each objective will describe what you need to record for your CA so they can keep track of and progress the story.
