13. Familiars
Within some scenarios small, helpful companions, called familiars, can be encountered that might attach themselves to a hero. Using this option rule, a hero who has befriended a familiar can continue this relationship beyond the game.
All familiars must have a master, which must be a hero. Many familiars bond with the first hero they encounter, so warbands may or may not have a choice as to who the familiar befriends. How and who a familiar chooses for their master is made clear in the scenario the familiar appears in.
A familiar is considered to be the miscellaneous equipment of their master that does not take up a warrior slot of your warband. On the table, familiars need a model and are treated like a normal member of your warband. Should a familiar be taken out of action they are treated as henchmen during post game serious injury rolls. Should a familiar’s master ever die, they will abandon the warband. Heroes may only ever be master to one familiar at a time. Should a second familiar ever join a warband they will choose a hero that does not have a familiar to be their master.

Familiar: Growltigress is a familiar and follows all of their rules.
It’s Just a Cat: Growltigress is not a serious danger to opponents so all models can run when within 8” of her. She is never considered to be an enemy warrior.
Live to Fight Another Day: If charged while in base contact with her master, Growltigress can either flee 2D6” directly away from the charger or keep base contact but be moved so that the charger comes into contact with her master instead. If charged while not with her master, Growltigress must flee. After any flee move Growltigress automatically rallies during next recovery phase.
Cat Fight: When in base contact with her master Growltigress will assist in close combat. All enemy attacks are at -1 to hit the hero as the cat scurries around the enemy’s legs scratching, hissing, even occasionally climbing. Growltigress does not have to be touching enemy models to assist her master. Enemies, however, must be in base contact to attack Growltigress.
Carefree Running: Growltigress can always run even when enemies are within 8”. She is small and agile so can move through other models as if they were not there, automatically escaping from combat if wishing to.
Very Nimble Target: All attacks against Growltigress have an additional -1 to hit penalty.
