Save the Captain?

(Special Scenario)

Special Scenario: Save the Captain?

 - Written by Timo Kurvi

The clues and messages left by Hugo Verteidiger have indicated that he is both alive and believes to have been poisoned by treaturous members of his own Ravenwatch. Warbands that are aware of this complot perk their ears when sightings of a flag flying the Ravenwatch symbol are mentioned in passing.

“I saw what looked like a giant black banner hangin’ from a tall buildin’ (three or four stories high was it?). Somewhere north of the Raven barracks it was. Woven into it was a bird perched upon a spear holding a key. Where’ve I seen ‘at before? Hey! Could the bird be a raven? With the raven barracks bein’ close by an’ all? See, me mum dinna raise no clod.”

Warbands scramble to locate the building which has clearly been “flagged” by Captain Verteidiger, only to discover two structures matching the description but no banner draped upon either.

What You Need For The Game
Settlements

None.

Place two large buildings, each with at least three floors, relatively close to each other and equally apart from the center point of the table. These are the objective buildings of the scenario. Place a marker for the Ravenwatch Banner in the exact center of the table. Fill the rest of battlefield with urban terrain normally.

Terrain (urban)
Deployment

Warbands deploy normally.

After deployment place random fortune markers. Roll a D100 on the random fortune table for any random fortune discoveries.

Random Fortune

Death Throes: Captain Verteidiger is in the final stages of the poisoning; unconscious and his body is flailing with seizures. Hugo will not recover from this state during the game, and is treated as a heavy carried item with the added exception; should a warband carrying Hugo rout, they automatically loose control of the captain’s flailing body if there are any standing enemy models within charge range. Uncontrolled carried item recovery rolls for Hugo are not made when the game ends. The warband which remains on the table automatically secures him.

Special Rules

Southern Spy: Anna Montez is an Estalian spy and assassin who has been hired to administer the antidote of the poison killing Hugo. She does this automatically when coming in to base contact with Hugo’s model. However, Anna cannot administer the antidote while Hugo is controlled by enemy warriors, and must remain 1” away. While Anna can charge enemies, she is expecting assistance from a warband to be her “muscle” for this mission.

Should one of the warbands have obtained more objectives to this side quest than any other warband, Anna automatically deploys with them, serving as if she was a member of their warband for the game. If this is not the case, Anna begins the game as described in Fog of Floor, below.

While not serving in a warband Anna will remain in place waiting for the assistance promised her. Any warrior coming into base contact with Anna makes a Leadership test. Passing the test convinces Anna that their warband is the muscle power she is waiting for and joins the warband for the game. If the test is failed, the player who had the last turn can move Anna up to 10”, ignoring all models, to a new location. Anna will always use her Acrobat skill when applicable. Anna will remain in this new location until another warrior comes into base contact and attempts a Leadership test.

Fog of Floor: Warbands arriving in the area notice the two buildings fitting the description they’ve heard. Both will need to be searched.

The moment the first model enters either objective building, the opposing player can choose to place either Hugo Verteidiger’s or Anna Montez’ model* into the objective building of their choice onto any upper level floor. The first player then places the remaining model onto any floor of the opposite building. In a game with multiple warbands, different opposing players will place both models (roll off if needed).

*If Anna begins the game serving a warband only the model for Hugo Verteidiger is placed.

Black Flag: Hanging the Ravenwatch Banner as a sign of his location was indeed Hugo’s last act before his body began convulsing uncontrollably. Unfortunately a sharp breeze tore the flag off the building and it has drifted to the ground. The banner is a loyalty symbol, and a carried item during this game.

Starting the Game

Determine the order of play normally.

Ending the Game

The game ends when any of the following happens:

  • Anna Montez administers the antidote to Hugo. The warband Anna is serving wins the game.

  • Hugo’s body is carried off any table’s edge, the warband doing so wins the game.

  • A routing warband controls Hugo with no enemy models in charge range to Captain Verteidiger, winning the game.

  • Hugo and only one warband remain on the table, this warband winning the game.

The winning warband gets to choose Hugo Verteidiger fate, delivering him to either his friend Father Micha (Captain’s Return) or his enemy Luigi Stiletto (Stiletto’s Rise).

Scenario Elements

The flag of Mordheim’s former watchmen, the Ravenwatch Banner is a Loyalty Symbol. Since most of the former watch live in Brigandsburg, should the banner be gifted to Brigandsburg it is worth 2 loyalty points instead of 1.

If not immediately gifted, the Ravenwatch Banner can be equipped by a hero. It functions as the miscellaneous equipment: banner, with the exception that if the hero goes out of action the banner falls to the ground as a carried item.

It also confers the Law & Order Reputation for as long as the warband possess the banner.
